FROM AIPA: As a surfer and shaper, my intention is to combine design, craftsmanship and performance into a surfboard. For a surfboard to look aesthetically pleasing is okay, but my philosophy is responsiveness, reaction and performance is just as – if not more – important. I enjoy shaping surfboards because designs are constantly evolving and I am challenged to find solutions that advance the modern surfboard design. Advancements in the sport and lifestyle of surfing ultimately bring about fun. What other sport can you think of that you can order a custom designed craft that you get so much enjoyment from?

I was born and raised in Hawai‘i, and I was blessed to have grown up with a father – Ben Aipa – that surfed and built surfboards. He was my mentor, teacher and coach. I am so lucky to have been a part of his coaching, lifestyle and surf travel experiences.

A sense for adventure was a part of our family from the start, and this lifestyle has led me around the world in search of perfect waves and different cultures. I have traveled to search for waves, compete in surf contests, and to find my way in life. In 1988 as a senior in high school, I was waiting at my father’s factory for him to finish shaping so we could go surfing. I got bored just watching, and I decided to shape a board to pass time, and I guess I haven’t stopped since. It has been a fun, humbling process to learn to bind the art form, craftsmanship and performance of shaping surfboards together.

Having a mentor that has shaped surfboards from the ‘60’s and on through today inspired me and gave me a foundation in design evolution. My dad was at the forefront of the shortboard revolution and I hope to be a part of the modern shortboard resurgence. Growing up on O‘ahu I got to ride so many different surfboards: longboards at Makaha and Waikiki; shortboards at Ala Moana Bowls and Hale‘iwa; and then on to Sunset, Pipeline and my favorite wave Backdoor.

These experiences on so many different surfboard designs, my family’s legacy and Hawaiian heritage bridge my surfing and shaping. It’s my honor to build you a custom surfboard that will bring you joy.

Mahalo,

Akila Aipa
