Back in 1967, the company started hand-making packs on the second floor of an old transmission shop in Seattle. They didn’t really care. They just wanted them to hold up during many outdoor adventures — and maybe sell enough to avoid getting real jobs. Skip was the salesman, Murray designed the packs, and Murray’s girlfriend, Jan did the sewing. When Murray asked Jan to marry him, he said he’d name the company after her if she said ‘yes’. She did. And JanSport was born.
